Clinical Significance
When a standard dose of glucose is given orally, absorption occurs rapidly and the blood glucose concentration
increases. This stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin, then after 30 – 60 minutes, the blood glucose level begins to
decrease. This test measures whether glucose levels indicate normal, impaired glucose tolerance or is diagnostic of
diabetes. The postprandial (after meal) glucose is used to establish the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.
