Minimum Volume

Draw volume = 8.3 mL

NOTE: No pediatric SPS tube(s) available. Use the standard SPS tube for pediatric patients

Specimen Stability

Send to the Lab within 2 hours of collection.
Time from collection to arrival for processing at Lab should never exceed 72 hours for SPS tubes.
DO NOT refrigerate specimens.
DO NOT place specimens on ice.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

SPS with less than 6ml in tube.

Non-Isolator or SPS tubes such as Acid Citrate Dextrose (ACD) yellow top, EDTA, Red Top Tubes.
Any expired tubes.
Any specimen received on ice or refrigerated.
Any tube received after excessive transport time.

Clinical Significance

Yeasts and molds may be causes of fungemia. Blood culture results may aid in the diagnosis of systemic fungal infections.
