Preferred Specimen
The patient must have a blood type on record in the Blood Bank. If a blood type is not available, refer to Blood Type (BTFR) for specimen collection requirements. Call Blood Bank for clarification, if needed.
Instructions
Cryoprecipitate may be ordered with specific special instructions. The special ordering instructions MUST be included on the requisition. These include the following:
Cryoprecipitate is stored as a frozen product with a shelf life of one year. Random Cryoprecipitate expires 6 hours after being thawed. Cryoprecipitate pooled in a closed system expires 6 hours after being thawed. Cryoprecipitate pooled in an open system expires 4 hours after being thawed. All thawed cryoprecipitate is stored at room temperature.
- Donor Directed Units: The physician has ordered blood products collected from friends/relatives designated specifically for use by this patient. Units must be available at the blood supplier.
- Topical (limited blood banks): Add this comment if the cryoprecipitate will be used as a topical application.
- Call blood bank to see if they supply random Cryo for topical use (see Clinical Significance section).

Setup Schedule
Call the Blood Bank and request Cryoprecipitate be thawed 30 minutes prior to need.

INDICATIONS FOR USE
Detailed information on recommendations for transfusion can be found in the "AABB Circular of Information for the Use of Human Blood and Blood Components" located on the AABB web site (link below).
http://www.aabb.org/tm/coi/Pages/default.aspx
TRANSFUSION: Cryoprecipitate is transfused to increase specific coagulation factors: Factor VIII, Factor XIII, Fibrinogen, Fibronectin and vonWillebrand's Factor. It does not contain the other factors that are in FFP. Transfusion dose is based on patient weight: Adult Dose (70kg) = 10 units.
TOPICAL APPLICATION (limited, contact blood bank):
Topical application of cryoprecipitate is used to prevent wound "oozing." Single units of cryo for use in the preparation of fibrin glue are available from limited blood banks; however, commercial viral inactivated concentrates (fibrin sealants) with higher fibrinogen concentrations are preferred for this purpose.
