Limitations
Propylene glycol, 1,2-butanediol, 1,3-butanediol, and 2,3-butanediol can cause false-positives with this method. Other interferences include lactic acidosis, high LDH concentration, high glycerol concentration, hemolysis, icterus, and lipemia. This test was performed using a kit that has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. The performance characteristics of this test has been determined by Banner University Medical Center Phoenix/Laboratory Sciences of Arizona.

Reference Range
< 10

Clinical Significance
Ethylene glycol is a principle component in automotive antifreeze and brake fluids. Ethylene glycol intoxication can result in the development of metabolic acidosis and/or renal failure. Fomepizole delays metabolism of ethylene glycol and provides the basis for therapy.
