Preferred Specimen
Stool placed in Para-Pak C&S vial (orange lid)- preferred specimen
Minimum Volume
1 gram of solid stool or 5mL of liquid stool. Specimens submitted with less than the required mininum volume will be cancelled, and the test not performed.
Other Acceptable Specimens
Raw stool- acceptable but not preferred
Rectal swab (using eSwab or routine culture swabs)- acceptable but not preferred
Rectal swab (using eSwab or routine culture swabs)- acceptable but not preferred
Instructions
NOTE: Collect fresh stool (1 gram solid or 5 mL or more liquid) in a clean, screw-capped container. If available, place into Para-Pak C&S transport media.

Specimen Stability
Unpreserved / raw Stool: Send to the Lab within 2 hours of collection. If unpreserved /raw stool specimen is received in lab after 2 hours, specimen will be rejected and test cancelled.
Preserved Stool (in a Para-Pak C&S container) is stable for 96 hours after collection. If preserved stool is received in lab after 96 hours, specimen will be rejected and test cancelled.
Rectal eSwabs are stable for up to 48 hours.
Any stool specimens sent refrigerated or frozen will be rejected and test cancelled.

Clinical Significance
Yersinia enterocolitica causes a variety of symptoms depending upon the age of the patient. In children, symptoms often include fever, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea.
