Includes
Culture for Vibrio ONLY. This culture does NOT include routine stool pathogens.


Preferred Specimen
Stool placed in Para-Pak C&S vial (orange lid)- preferred specimen


Minimum Volume
1 gram solid stool or 5mL liquid stool. If specimen is received with less than the minimum volume test will be cancelled.


Other Acceptable Specimens
Raw stool - not preferred but acceptable
Rectal swab (using routine culture swabs or eSwab) - not preferred but acceptable


Instructions
Collect fresh stool (1 gram solid or 5 mL or more liquid) in a clean, screw-capped container. If available, place into PARA-PAK C&S transport media.

Specimen Stability
For unpreserved specimens such as liquid stool, swabs, and formed stool: Send to the Lab within 2 hours of collection. If unpreserved stool is received in the lab after 2 hours, the specimen will be rejected and test cancelled.
Eswab is stable for up to 48 hours

For preserved specimens (those in Para-Pak C&S preservative {orange lid}): Send to the lab within 2 hours of collection. If preserved stool is received in the lab after 96 hours, the specimen will be rejected and test cancelled.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Unacceptable specimens:
Stool in O&P ParaPak/ total fix preservative
Any stool frozen or refrigerated 
Rectal swab in viral transport medium
Diapers
Raw stool >2 hours in transport not placed in transport medium such as Para-Pak C&S (orange lid).
Dried stool or swabs
Any stool/ swab received in the lab past the stability time (2 and 96 hours respectively as described above).


Clinical Significance
Vibrio, Culture - Vibrio species are usually associated with infection when isolated. Vibrio spp. should be tested for when the patient has been exposed to water or contaminated food such as shellfish.

Arizona: Testing performed at Banner Gateway Medical Center Microbiology Laboratory.
Wyoming Medical Center: Testing performed on site.
