Clinical Significance
Calcofluor white is used for rapid screening of clinical specimens for fungal elements. Calcofluor white stain is a colorless, nonspecific fluorescent dye that binds certain polysaccharides present in cellulose and chitin. It exhibits fluorescence when the dye is exposed to long wave ultraviolet light and short wavelength visible light. Clinical specimen (fresh, frozen, fixed, or paraffinimbedded) where fungus including Pneumocystis jiroveci is suspected or fungal growth isolated on culture media is suitable for examination using this test.
