Instructions
Special Blood Bank Identification process is required for a Transfusion Reaction Workup. Sample should be labeled with Blood Bank Identification band already on patient, if present. A handwritten BBID is acceptable if no additional labels are present on band. Related procedure: Banner Intranet under Policies & Procedures, titled "Transfusion Reactions."

Transfusion Reaction Workups are performed as a STAT procedure. Results of testing are reviewed by a pathologist. Preliminary results, either positive or negative evaluations are called to the caregiver. If testing indicates serologic evidence of a transfusion reaction, the physician will be contacted.

Clinical Significance
Positive transfusion reaction results that indicate a possible hemolytic transfusion reaction, TRALI or bacterial contamination of the unit are critical and are called to the nursing unit / physician.
