RBC Phenotyping
MessageOrder is for complete red blood cell phenotype on patient. Performed in Blood Bank at some hospital sites, otherwise testing is sent to Immunohematology Reference Lab.
Test Code
RBCPHENO
Alias/See Also
Red Blood Cell Phenotyping, Blood Bank
Preferred Specimen
2 Pink 6.0 mL tubes
Call Blood Bank to determine if patient has a current Type & Screen (TASO)
Call Blood Bank to determine if patient has a current Type & Screen (TASO)
Other Acceptable Specimens
Lavender 6.0 mL and red top tubes are usable, but not preferred.
Instructions
If physician specifically requests genotyping, blood bank sends testing to reference lab for molecular typing, if not done previously. Special Blood Bank Identification process is not required for RBC Phenotype testing. However, specimens collected without the Blood Bank Identification process cannot be used for later crossmatch testing.
Report Available
Results can be available as soon as same day or longer if testing performed by the Immunohematology Reference lab.
Reference Range
None
Clinical Significance
An RBC phenotype can be useful for bone marrow candidates, sickle cell patients, and for providing phenotypically matched RBC transfusions in case of warm autoantibodies, if indicated. Also, for patients on monoclonal antibody drugs (Daratumumab for example), a complete RBC phenotype is required in order to provide phenotypically matched red cells when a panagglutinin is present. The RBC phenotype test includes antigen typing for D, C, E, c, e, K, Fy(a), Fy(b), Jk(a), Jk(b), S, and s. Other antigens may be tested, if indicated.
