Preferred Specimen
Urine specimen submitted in urine collection tube.
If Urinalysis order includes reflex to culture, a gray top urine culture tube should be submitted with urine specimen if volume permits.
If Urinalysis order includes reflex to culture, a gray top urine culture tube should be submitted with urine specimen if volume permits.
Minimum Volume
10 mL urine preferred (full tube); minimum 1 mL required.
Other Acceptable Specimens
Sterile cup if tubes are not available.
Instructions
Transport specimen to lab as soon as possible after collection. Urine specimens should be analyzed within 2 hours of collection or refrigerated/preserved.

2 hours at room temperature (unless preserved); 24 hours refrigerated
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimens submitted in unapproved/unvalidated collection containers, or with unvalidated preservatives will be rejected. Volumes less than 1mL may be insufficient for testing.
Reference Range
Urobilinogen 0.2 - 1.0, Specific gravity 1.005 - 1.030, WBC 0 - 5, RBC 0 - 2, Squamous epithelial cells 0 - 5, all other dipstick/microscopic parameters negative/none.
Clinical Significance
Urinalysis can provide the physician with important information regarding the status of a patient’s health and can detect metabolic disease and renal disorders. Urinalysis test results are used in at-risk patient groups to assist diagnosis in the following areas: kidney function, urinary tract infections, carbohydrate metabolism (e.g., diabetes mellitus)
