Clinical Significance
HSV is a common cause of sexually transmitted disease. Clinical symptoms may present as fever, malaise, mucocutaneous and cutaneous lesions and vaginal or urethral discharge.  While lesions are usually self-limited, severe disease can occur in immunocompromised patients, pregnant woman and infants.  After primary HSV infection, the virus colonizes the sensory neurons, and the latent infection may reactivate causing recurrent infection. Lesions can be mucocutaneous from sites in the anorectal, genital, nasal, ocular, oral, and urethra region and the cutaneous lesions may include both genital and skin lesions.
