Transport Temperature
Best stored at room temp. Cold temps may lead to a gradual loss of VFW and Factor VIII activity. Do not transport directly on ice packs or on ice.


Specimen Stability
Whole Blood
Non-heparinized patients (or patients on heparin that is not unfractionated heparin)
 Room temperature/Refrigerated: 6 hours

Patients on direct oral anticoagulants
 Room temperature: 2 hours

Patients on unfractionated heparin – deliver to the laboratory ASAP
  Room temperature: 1 hour

Aliquoted Plasma
Non-heparinized patients (or patients on heparin that is not unfractionated heparin)
 Room temperature: 6 hours
Frozen: 3 months at -20C or 4 months at-70C.

Patients on direct oral anticoagulants
 Room temperature: 2 hours

Patients on unfractionated heparin – deliver to the laboratory ASAP
Room temperature: 1 hour


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Underdrawn or grossly hemolyzed specimens are not acceptable
