Target A1C values should be individualized.  Better understanding of, A1C test result accuracy is essential if clinicians are to interpret results for Veterans, and discuss treatment options through, the process of Shared Decision Making. The Abbott HgA1c assay should not be used to diagnose or monitor diabetes in patients with altered red cell lifespan, such as homozygous hemoglobin variants, Hb SC, HbF >5% and hemolytic anemia.  Heterozygous hemoglobin variants, HbAS, HbAC, HbAD, HbAE, and HbA2 do not affect this assay.

Clinical Significance

Hemoglobin A1c measurements are used as an aid in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, to identify patients who may be at risk for developing diabetes mellitus, and for the monitoring of long-term blood glucose control in individuals with diabetes mellitus.
