Stage of illness, specimen choice, specimen collection technique and specimen handling and transport will affect the sensitivity of culture and PCR results. Negative results do not rule out infection. Laboratory results must be interpreted in light of overall patient information.
30% of primary mumps may be sub-clinical. Mumps infection can occur without parotitis. Parotid swelling may have other viral/bacterial causes (coxsackievirus, echovirus, parainfluenza, influenza A, herpes simplex and varicella zoster virus, and S. aureus). Parotid pain or swelling may have a non-infectious cause.
