Interpretive Criteria
HDV infection occurs only in association with HBV infection. Detection of HDV IgM suggests either recent/acute infection or chronic infection with IgM persistence. HDV RNA PCR testing can also be considered as an aid in the diagnosis and staging of infection.

Clinical Significance
Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) infection occurs only in association with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection. A positive result for HDV IgM indicates either recent HDV infection or chronic HDV infection with IgM persistence.
