1.2a - BACL Hours of Operation, Extent of Service and Access to Services

Message

Scope of Services Provided:

The Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service provides care for both inpatients and outpatients. The following sections comprise the discrete departmental sections of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. Clinical laboratory specimens collected at sites other than West Roxbury and after routine hours of operations are transported via courier service to the main laboratory at the West Roxbury division Transportation of clinical laboratory specimens to West Roxbury laboratory after hours is arranged through the Administrative Officer of the Day (Bedford) or Urgent Care (Brockton) or by call the West Roxbury laboratory (JP).

Accessing Services:

  • There is no self-referral of patients for Laboratory Service. Patients (inpatient and outpatient) gain access to the services that the Laboratory provides through a VA BHS provider (VA Bedford provider for Bedford patients). Providers use CPRS/GUI to order Clinical Pathology services. Providers use SF 515 or printed electronic request from CPRS/GUI to order Anatomic Pathology services. (Note: A paper form must be submitted with all surgical or cytology specimens. A completed permission slip signed by Next of Kin or Chief of Staff must be submitted for autopsy authorization.)
  • Patient test results are entered into the patient’s electronic medical record regardless of patient location. The patient’s inpatient and outpatient providers have access to the patient’s electronic medical record. Tests ordered while the patient is an inpatient, but results reported after discharge are treated as outpatient tests. These tests are communicated by the ordering inpatient provider or their surrogate to the patient’s outpatient primary care provider or practitioner who can take action on the results.
