Urinalysis sample collection
1. All routine urinalysis specimens must be properly labeled and must be accompanied by a computer generated lab order number or proper requisition slip.
2. The urine specimen must contain at least 12 mLs of urine for analysis.
3. The urine specimen must be brought to the Laboratory as soon after the collection as possible.  All urine specimens should be examined within one (1) hour after collection.  If not possible, the following steps should be taken to preserve the integrity of the urinalysis specimen.
4. Ward's Responsibility: If the urine specimen can not be delivered to the Laboratory within one (1) hour, the ward personnel must refrigerate (2-8°C) the urine specimen.
5. Technologist/Technician Responsibility: All urine samples should be analyzed within one (1) hour of receipt of specimen by the Laboratory. If impossible, the responsible individual must refrigerate the urine specimen until analysis can be completed.
6. The routine urinalysis test includes the detection of the following analytes: specific gravity, glucose, pH, occult blood, ketones, urobilinogen, nitrites, bilirubin, protein, leukocyte esterase (LE), color and clarity.
7.A separate, clean, voided urine specimen is required for culture and sensitivity.
8. Specimens > 48 hours old will be rejected.
9. A microscopic exam will automatically be performed on urine specimens that yield >=10 mg/dL of protein, positive nitrite, positive leukocytes or positive blood. If requested a microscopic exam will be performed.
