Clinical Significance
HAV infection is a self limited, often subclinical disorder. During the acute phase of HAV infection, IgM antibody to HAV is detectable at the onset of symptoms. In most cases, IgM anti-HAV persists throughout the first 3-6 months after acute infection.
Results are reported as negative, positive or borderline. Patients with borderline results should be monitored over time (1-2 weeks) to distinguish rising IgM anti-HAV levels (associated with acute HAV infection) from falling IgM levels (associated with recovery).
