Reference Range
Test | Reference range | Units | Interpretation |
Cholesterol | 0 - 199 | mg/dL |
<200 is desirable; 200-239 is borderline/high; >240 is high |
Triglyceride | 0 - 149 | mg/dL | |
HDL | 40 - 60 | mg/dl | |
LDL Calculated or Direct | 0 - 129 | mg/dL |
Evaluation of cardiovascular risk is based on the following range of values: Reference: Executive Summary of the Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Treatment Panel III), JAMA 2001;285:2486-2497 |
Clinical Significance
In a standard lipid panel, the LDL value is calculated based on the concentrations of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. At triglyceride concentrations above 300 mg/dL, the calculated LDL is inaccurate. In such cases, it is appropriate to measure LDL directly.
