Reference Range
Test Reference range Units Interpretation
Cholesterol  0 - 199  mg/dL

<200 is desirable; 200-239 is borderline/high; >240 is high

Triglyceride  0 - 149  mg/dL
HDL  40 - 60  mg/dl
LDL Calculated or Direct  0 - 129  mg/dL

Evaluation of cardiovascular risk is based on the following range of values:
Desirable: <100 mg/dL
Low risk: 100-129 mg/dL
Borderline high: 130-159 mg/dL
High: 160-189 mg/dL
Very high: > or =190 mg/dL

Clinical Significance
In a standard lipid panel, the LDL value is calculated based on the concentrations of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. At triglyceride concentrations above 300 mg/dL, the calculated LDL is inaccurate. In such cases, it is appropriate to measure LDL directly.
