Optometry/Ophthalmology may come into the lab requesting media for beside culturing. Media must be routinely checked and used before expiration dates.
Media to be handed out consists of:
• Blood Agar (Trypticase Soy Agar w/ 5% Sheep Blood)
• Chocolate Agar
• Chopped Meat Broth (Cooked Meat Medium w/ Hemin & Vitamin K w/ glucose)
• Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (Fungal)
• Microscope slide (Might already be previously obtained from department)
• Per Request:

Corneal Scrapings:
Specimen is obtained on the sterile spatula or bore and is plated directly on each of the desired media plates. 5-10 “C” shape inoculations are made on each plate and a small amount of material may be introduced into the Chopped Meath Broth (CMG). A small amount of material is placed on a clean glass side after the media is inoculated. Provider will mark around the area touched as only a small amount of material is available for placement on the slide. Plates should be taped to prevent them from opening during transport. Slide should be placed in a slide transport holder.
