Mycology culture is automatically reflexed if the gram stain shows any segmented neutrophils or yeast present.

Instructions
Lumbar puncture (LP)
a. Disinfect the puncture site with antiseptic solution and alcohol to prevent contamination and/or the introduction of infection
b. Insert needle with stylet at points ranging from L1-L2 to L4-L5 interspace. When the subarachnoid space is reached, remove the stylet; spinal fluid will appear in the needle hub.
c. Measure the hydrostatic pressure with a manometer
d. Sequentially collect CSF into a minimum of three (routinely four) sterile calibrated tubes. Additional tubes may be necessary if additional tests are required. Tube 2, 3 or 4 may be used for gram stain and culture. Tube 1 is only used for gram stain/culture if it is the only tube provided. 
e. Submit immediately to the laboratory.
