Preferred Specimen
PCR: Buccal swab in conjuction with either an oropharyngeal swab or nasopharyngeal swab. Whenever possible, both a buccal swab and respiratory swab should be collected.
Instructions
Using only snthetic-tipped swabs massage the parotid gland just in the front of the ear and near the angle of the jaw for 30 seconds. Swab the area between the cheek and gum by sweeping the swab near the upper molar to the lower molar area. Specimens should be stored and shipped at 2-8C. Swab specimens should be submitted in viral transport media.

Specimens received without a form and clincial details or with insufficient material to analyze. Specimens in poorly labeled or leaking containers will not be tested. Do not use wooden shaft or calcium alginate swabs. Do not freeze specimens for PCR testing.

Report Available
PCR results are generally available within 24 hours after arrival. Serology samples are forwarded to federal CDC. Results availability will vary but generally wihtin 2-3days.
