Preferred Specimen
  • Swab of urethra, cervix, endocervix, vagina, anal canal, eye, or throat (two swabs are recommended)
  • Joint fluid
    Please specify body site for all specimens.

NOTE: For urine specimens, order the appropriate aptima test [APT - Chlamydia/N. Gonorrhoeae (Aptima) or APTNG - Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, RNA TMA (Aptima) ].

Instructions
Use a small wire shaft nasopharngeal swab to collect male urethral specimens.
Calcium alginate, cotton, wooden shaft swabs are not acceptable since they are toxic to GC.
Sample must be received by the laboratory and planted within 6 hours from collection.

Male Urethra: Swab (nasopharyngeal) in  Amies Transport Media
Fluids: Sterile Container, Leak-Proof
All other specimens: Swab (Dacron or Rayon) in Amies Transport Media

Refrigerated: Unacceptable
Frozen: Unacceptable


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Female genital specimens collected with a swab other than an Amies swab
