Clinical Significance
Group A Streptococcus (S.pyogenes) is the most common cause of bacterial pharyngitis (strep throat) causing local pharyngeal pain, adenopathy, and fever. These diseases may cause acute complete obstruction of the airway. Consider and prepare for airway management prior to throat culture in these illnesses. Serious systemic sequelae of untreated GAS infection include glomerulonephritis and acute rheumatic fever.
