Clinical Significance
Bacterial meningitis is a rapidly fatal disease if untreated or inadequately treated. Lumbar puncture and examination of the CSF should be undertaken whenever the physician suspects meningitis or wants to rule it out. Bacterial meningitis is predominately caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitis, and Strep pneumoniae. Bacterial meningitis may be secondary to infections in other areas. Neonatal meningitis is predominately caused by Group B Beta Hemolytic Strep, E. coli, and Listeria monocytogenes.
