Preferred Specimen
Sputum, stool, urine, and body fluid washes. Call microbiology for volumes.


Instructions
Must be collected in a sealed sterile leak proof container. Keep tissues moist with sterine saline. Send to the lab immediately. Do not collect in EDTA.

Specimens that cannot be processed within one hour of collection should be refrigerated during and transport and storage.

Reports issued at 2,4, and 6 weeks. Smear reported in 24 hours.


Clinical Significance
It is recommended that 3 sputum specimens be collected for patients that have clinical and chest x-ray findings compatible with tuberculosis.  These three samples should be collected at 8 to 24 hour intervals (24hours when possible) and should include at least one first morning specimen.
