Preferred Specimen
3.0 mL whole blood in Sodium Fluoride (gray top). The tube must be half full.
2.0 mL whole blood in Lithium Heparin (green or mint top) 1.0 mL of plasma
0.6 mL of CSF
Minimum Volume
2.0 mL of whole blood in Sodium Fluoride (gray top). The tube must be half full.
0.6 mL of whole blood in Lithium Heparin (green or mint top) 0.3 mL of plasma
0.3 mL of CSF
Instructions
Specimen should be collected w/out a tourniquet and sent to the lab immediately. Patients should avoid any exercising of the hand. Gray top tube plasma should be separated from the cells within 3 hours. Heparinized blood must be analyzed within 15 minutes and sent to the laboratory on ice. Do not use the pneumatic tube system.
