Preferred Specimen
1.0 ml of whole blood (0.5 mL of serum or plasma)


Minimum Volume
0.2 mL of whole blood (0.1 mL of serum or plasma)


Instructions
Avoid hemolysis.  Separate cells within 4 hours.


Transport Container
Serum separator (gold top) or lithium heparin (green or mint top). Lithium Hepartin cannot be used for TIBC (Iron panel) testing.

Room Temperature: 4 days
Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: 3 months at -18 C

Report Available
Inpatient turn around time: Stat 45 minutes.  Routine specimens received by noon will be reported by 4:30. Specimens received after noon will be reported by the next morning.
