Homocysteine

Message
Specimen must be collected in a chilled tube and kept on ice for transport to the laboratory. Do not freeze specimen prior to centrifugation. Fasting specimens are preferred.

Test Code
HCY

Preferred Specimen

1.0 mL of whole blood (0.5 mL of serum)

Minimum Volume
0.2 mL of whole blood (0.1 mL of serum)

Instructions

SPECIAL PROCESSING:
To minimize increases in Homocysteine conc. from synthesis by RBC's
process as follows:
- Place all specimens(serum or plasma) on ice after collection &
prior to processing. Serum may clot more slowly and the volume of
serum may be reduced.
- All specimens may be kept on ice for up to 6 hours prior to
separation by centrifugation.
- Separate red blood cells from serum or plasma by centrifugation
transfer to another tube, and return to ice or refrigerator.
Note: Storage at room temperature will result in an increase of HCY
values by 1 UMOL/L per hour.

Transport Container
Serum Separator (gold top)

Transport Temperature
Refrigerated

Specimen Stability

Room Temperature: Unacceptable
Refrigerated: 10 days
Frozen: 30 days.
