Inpatient turn around time: Stat 30 minutes, routine 3 hours.  Outpatient specimens received by noon will be reported by 4:30. Specimens received after noon will be reported by the next morning.


Clinical Significance
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In diabetes, the measurement of Beta-hydroxybutyrate as well as the blood glucose is needed for the assessment of the severity of diabetic coma and is essential for the exclusion of non-ketotic diabetic coma.  Also the amount of serum ketones is helpful for determining insulin requirements.
