Limitations
Specimens from patients with hemolytic anemias may exhibit decreased glycohemoglobin levels compared to patients with normal red cell life span.  Specimens from patients with polycythemia or post spleectomy patients may exhibit increased glycohemoglobin levels.

Clinical Significance
Hemoglobin A1C offers a more accurate indication of the patient's long term diabetic control over the last two or three months
