Preferred Specimen
Wampole Isolator 10-mL tube(s)
Minimum Volume
Full tube of blood
Instructions
Specimen should be obtained as follows before administration of antibiotics.
1. Obtain Wampole Isolator 10-mL tube for each set of fungus cultures ordered.
2. Always draw fungus blood culture before other specimen.
3. Disinfect stopper surfaces with 10% polyvinyl alcohol iodine. Do not allow iodine to pool on stopper. Iodine could enter tube and kill organisms in specimen.
4. Allow to dry completely for about 1 minute.
5. Draw blood by venipuncture with VACUTAINER holder in an aseptic fashion.
6. Allow tube to fill completely with 10 mL of blood. Short specimens decrease the chance of isolating already low numbers of organisms. If specimen is short, draw another tube. Draw blood with patient’s arm in a downward position. Hold tube/needle assembly so the bottom is lower than needle.
7. Immediately after drawing, invert 4 to 5 times to mix blood with contents of Wampole Isolator 10-mL tube(s). Incomplete mixing will cause small clots to form and patient must be redrawn.
8. Label tube with patient’s full name (first and last), date and actual time of draw, and type of specimen.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required. 2. Do not incubate specimen. 3. Butterfly collection kit is not recommended because blood clotting may occur prior to entry into tube. 4. During collection procedure, do not allow contents of tube to come into contact with yellow stopper. This may cause a back flow into patient’s arm causing irritation.
