Instructions
1. Disinfect skin around catheter with iodine before removing catheter.
2. Using aseptic technique, cut off approximately 2 inches of catheter being sure to include area of catheter directly below skin.
3. Label container with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection. Note: Specimen source is required.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Unacceptable Specimen: Urinary catheter

Monday through Sunday


Reference Range
No growth or normal skin flora in amounts <15 colony forming units.
A susceptibility test will automatically be set up on isolates found in amounts of >15 colony forming units.


Clinical Significance
Useful for determination of intravenous catheter-associated bacteremia.
