Culture, Anaerobic
MessageAll appropriate specimens collected to exclude indigenous flora and those from normally sterile body sites are acceptable for culture.
Test Code
405
CPT Codes
87075-Culture; 87076-Culture, any source, additional identification methods required
Preferred Specimen
Aspirated Fluid
Container/Tube: Syringe
Collection Instructions: 1. Obtain specimen from a source not normally colonized by anaerobes. 2. If specimen aspirated, exclude any air and send syringe. 3. Keep any tissue moist with sterile fluid. 4. Label container with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection.
Note: Specimen source is required.
Tissue
Container/Tube: Sterile container
Tissue Collection Instructions: 1.
Swab
An aerobic and anaerobic swab are required.
Aerobic culture is always set up with an anaerobic culture.
Container/Tube: Port-A-Cul anaerobic transport tube
Swab Collection Instructions: 1. Protect specimen from deleterious effects of oxygen until it can be cultured. 2. Swab should be placed deep into agar butt, swab stick broken off high where held, and cap replaced quickly. 3. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection. Note: Specimen source is required.
