Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Screen
Message
This test is a screening procedure for a single type bacteria only. Other pathogens will not be isolated or identified. Specimens obtained from infected sites should have a culture ordered. Routine cultures are always examined for the presence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Preferred Specimen
In order to obtain an adequate specimen, the procedure for specimen collection must be followed closely.
Container/Tube: Culture transport container
Specimen Volume: BBL CultureSwab with Liquid Stuart Medium
Collection Instructions:
1. Moisten swab with 2 drops (about 50 µL) of sterile physiological serum (saline) or use it dry.
2. Carefully insert swab into patient’s nostril (swab tip must be inserted up to 2.5 cm (1 inch) from edge of nares).
3. Roll swab 5 times.
4. Insert same swab into second nostril and repeat sampling as in steps 2 and 3.
5. Replace swab in sterile culture transport container.
6. Crush ampule to ensure specimen preservation.
7. Label container with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required. 2. Indicate “MRSA screen” on request form. 3. Specimen should be kept between 2° C and 30° C during transport. Protect against freezing or exposure to excessive heat.
