KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) Preparation

Message
Cultures are more sensitive than smears; therefore, the KOH preparation may be negative when culture is positive. The addition of KOH is to hydrolyze proteinaceous debris, cells, etc. To determine the presence of fungi in mucoid specimens, a Gram stain is recommended.
