Preferred Specimen
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Fresh Tissue
Container/Tube: Sterile towel, sterile Petri dish, or sterile container(s)
Specimen Volume: Fresh tissue (2 blocks each 1 cm in length) with no added fixative
Forms: Surgical Pathology Request Form
Collection Instructions: 1. Label towel/dish/container with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection. 2. Notify histology technician or pathologist that specimen has been brought to Surgical Pathology Laboratory.
Fixed Tissue
Container/Tube: Sterile container(s)
Specimen Volume: Fixed tissue
Forms: Surgical Pathology Request Form
Collection Instructions: 1. Specimen may be obtained either by open biopsy in operating room or by needle biopsy in ultrasound room. 2. Ideally, 3 pieces of tissue are needed. Place 1 piece in Zenker’s fixative for light microscopy, 1 in cold glutaraldehyde fixative for electron microscopy, and another in Duboscq-Brazil fixative. 3. Label container with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection. 4. Notify histology technician or pathologist that specimen has been brought to Surgical Pathology Laboratory.
