Clinical Significance
This immunoperoxidase technique (PAP) is used to localize antigens in tissue sections. It allows pathologists to examine the presence of specific cell products or extracellular material. The major applications of the method include: identification of the cell of origin of an antigen (ie, endocrine neoplasms), abnormal distribution or number of cells producing an antigen in a lesion (ie, hyperplasia or hypoplasia of endocrine cells), loss of normal antigen in a neoplasm (ie, blood group antigens in bladder and breast neoplasms), identification of oncofetal antigens in neoplasms (ie, alpha-fetoprotein [AFP], carcinoembryonic antigen [CEA]), histogenesis of lesions (ie, identification of tissue-specific markers in soft tissue neoplasms), detection of microorganisms, and detection of autoantibodies.
