Preferred Specimen
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Gastric Fluid or Vomitus
Container/Tube: Sterile container(s)-Hemoccult slide is not acceptable.
Specimen Volume: 5 mL to 10 mL of gastric fluid or vomitus
Collection Instructions: Label container with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required. 2. Laboratory will apply specimen to correct slide. 3. Patient should not receive vitamin C (ascorbic acid) for 3 days prior to occult blood testing.
Stool
Container/Tube: Slide(s)
Collection Instructions: 1. Follow instructions using occult blood slide. 2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required. 2. Patient should not receive vitamin C (ascorbic acid) for 3 days prior to occult blood testing. 3. Antacids may give false-negative guaiac tests. "
