HIV-1/HIV-2 Antibody Screen (Reflex)

Test Code
HIVAB

Preferred Specimen
minimum 2.0 mL Serum

Instructions
Repeatedly reactive samples will be referred for confirmation by HIV-1 Western Blot  and HIV-2 Immunoblot, at an additional charge.

Transport Container
SST tube

Transport Temperature
  • Store samples at 2° to 8°C if not tested within 24 hours of collection.
  • Samples may be stored in primary tubes up to 5 days at 2° to 8°C. Primary tube specimens include serum stored on the clot, plasma stored on packed red cells, and specimens processed and stored in gel barrier blood collection tubes.
  • Samples collected in EDTA plastic, lithium heparin glass and plastic, and SST plastic tube types, may be stored at or below -20°C for up to 168 days.

Setup Schedule
Sun-Sat

Report Available
Negative results are available next day.

Limitations
It is recognized that currently available assays for the detection of antibodies to HIV-1 and/or HIV-2 may not detect all infected individuals. A nonreactive test result does not exclude the possibility of exposure to or infection with HIV. HIV antibodies may be undetectable in some stages of the infection and in some clinical conditions.

The performance of the assay has not been established for populations of infants or children or for cord blood, neonatal specimens, cadaver specimens, heat-inactivated specimens, or body fluids other than serum or plasma, such as saliva, urine, amniotic, or pleural fluids.

Reference Range
NonReactive

Clinical Significance
Detects antibodies to HIV. Reactive results are confirmed by the highly specific western blot or immunoblot.
