Clinical Significance
Erythrocyte sedimentation is a nonspecific reaction. The sedimentation of red cells in autologous plasma provides a measure of the acute phase reaction to inflammation. The ESR is increased when acute phase proteins are elevated, as seen in acute tissue damage, chronic inflammation, chronic infection, and pregnancy.
