Sputum or tracheostomy secretions


Instructions
First morning specimen preferred. Patient expectorates sputum by deep cough into a sterile container. If patient is unable to produce a specimen in this manner, induction of sputum by saline nebulization and aspiration into a suction trap may be employed.

Specimen stable for 2 hours at room temp., 24 hours refrigerated.

Isolation of potential respiratory pathogens can be useful in the diagnosis of respiratory tract infection.
