Shiga-Toxins (Ecoli O157) only done on natural stool specs. arriving in lab w/in 2 hrs of collection or in specimens sent in preservative (ex: ETM). Definitive ID for Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia, Campylobacter, Ecoli 0157. Sensitivities for Salmonella

Preferred Specimen
Feces- 1 gm (pea sized) random feces, rectal swab, duodenal contents, vomitus.


Instructions
Pathology approval required for: Patient samples collected after 3 days hospitalization and for more than 2 specimens per patient per hospitalization.


Transport Container
Clean container or ETM container


Transport Temperature
ETM container - Deliver to lab within 48 hrs of collection. Clean dry container specimen- stable for 2 hrs at room temp. or refrigerated. No contamination with urine or water.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Stool received >2 hours old


Reference Range
No Shigella, Salmonella, Yersinia, Campylobacter, Aeromonas, or Toxigenic E. Coli (O157) detected


Clinical Significance
Detects bacterial pathogenic organisms in the stool. Indications for stool culture may include: bloody diarrhea, fever, tenesmus, severe or persistant symotoms, recent travel to a third world country, known exposure to a bacterial agent and presence of fecal leukocytes.
