Instructions
Collect fluid aseptically through the needle port of the dialysis effluent bag or directly from the peritoneal catheter, and place the fluid in a sterile screw cap tube or container. Smaller volumes than 10 ml acceptable.

Specimen stable up to 2 hours at room temp, Refrigerated up to 24 hours


Reference Range
Critical Value: Positive smear or culture of any sterile body fluid.


Clinical Significance
Patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis are at risk of peritonitis. Most infections are due to aerobic organisms; occasionally fungi or anaerobic bacteria are implicated. This procedure will recover most clinically important aerobic bacteria and yeast.
