Preferred Specimen
Nasopharyngeal wash, aspirate or swab


Instructions
Use suction through a sterile trap tube to collect washes or aspirate specimens. Use a small volume of sterile saline if necessary, not to exceed a final specimen volume of 3 ml. or Swab the nasopharynx or oropharynx with a sterile rayon or dacron swab and transport in 1-2 ml of sterile saline.

Influenza Type A and B viruses cause seasonal outbreaks of the "flu".
