Swabs for Neisseria gonorrhoeae refrigerated up to 12 hours; swabs for other organisms refrigerated up to 36 hours; aspirates and fluids refrigerated up to 2 hours.

Recovery of bacteria from the genitourinary track may support clinical evidence of infection.
