Clinical Significance
A culture method is used to detect the presence of Group A streptococci (GAS), Streptococcus pyogenes, primarily in cases of upper respiratory tract infection. Although pharyngitis due to this organism is often self-limiting, rheumatic fever is an important sequel that can be prevented by adequate antimicrobial therapy of primary Group A streptococcus infections.
