Optimal Specimen requirements: Patient >12 years - 20 ml blood ( 10 ml to each bottle), Patient 6-12 years: 10 ml.- 5 ml in each bottle, Patient 0-5 years: 1-5 ml.: add entire volume to BACTEC PEDS plus F
Instructions
Decontaminate skin with ChloraPrep One -Step Frepp Applicator or with alcohol and povidone iodine. Sterile venipuncture. Provide anatomic collection site .

Transport Temperature
Place blood culture vials in the blood culture analyzer promptly. Storage at room temperature up to 2 hours is acceptable but prolongs organism recovery time.

Negative, Critical Value: All positives
Clinical Significance
The detection of microorganisms in blood has importance in the diagnosis and prognosis of endocarditis, septicemia or chronic bacteremia.
