Preferred Specimen
Dark Green Top Sodium Heparin Tube - Place specimen on ice after collection and analyze as soon as possible. Plasma from Lavender EDTA is also acceptable.
Specimen Stability
Specimen must be collected on ice and analyzed as soon as possible.
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Hemolysis and specimen received not on ice.
Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic test for the quantitative measurement of ammonia in human serum or plasma. Ammonia is used in the diagnosis and treatment of severe liver disorders such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, and Reye's syndrome. The inheritied deficiencies of urea cycle enzymes are the major cause of hyperammonemia in infants. Elevated ammonia is toxic to the central nervous system.
