Any body fluid or specimens collected by swabs • Ocular scrapings placed directly onto media and a clean microscope slide • Any respiratory sample • Any tissue sample


Transport Container
 Sterile containers are preferred but a culturette may be submitted for some sources.


Transport Temperature
Raw specimens should be transported immediately to lab; culturettes, hair, nail scroappings and skin scrappings are stable ambient temperature.


Specimen Stability
Room temperature: 72 hours
Refrigerated: 72 hours
Frozen: Unacceptable

Clinical Significance
Fungi can infect the cerebral spinal fluid, other body fluids, and tissues. Infections occur more commonly among patients who are immunocompromised. Early diagnosis and effective treatment can reduce the likelihood of severe sequelae.
